Senior Lecturer
Dr. Abbey MacDonald is a Senior Lecturer in Arts Education at the University of Tasmania's School of Education, Faculty of Education. She holds a PhD in Education and has over a decade of leadership in visual art education and research service roles. Her work bridges education, creative arts, and culture, focusing on policy advocacy, curriculum development, and museum/educator collaboration. Education: PhD in Education, University of Tasmania (2015) BTeach (Hons), University of Tasmania (2008) BFA (Hons), University of Tasmania (2005) Research Interests: Arts education innovation, interdisciplinary STEAM pedagogy, policy advocacy, and cultural resource creation. Current projects include Ngarrngga's education resources for Indigenous Australian art exhibitions and advancing methodologies in art-based research. She collaborates with museums, environmental groups, and cultural institutions to address educational challenges. Awards: 2024 InSEA Excellence in Praxis Award 2022 Engagement Award (UTAS) 2019 Teacher Educator of the Year 2018 Early Career Teaching Award Advising & Grants: Served as Research Translation Lead (UTAS), Graduate Research Coordinator, and Research Integrity Advisor. Leads projects funded by organizations including The Smith Family and Mona’s 24 Carrot Gardens. Collaborates on initiatives like HealthLit4Kids and STEAM Horizons professional learning. Labs/Teams: Part of Ngarrngga at the University of Melbourne, co-editing special issues on art/design education research, and leading the International Teaching Artists Collaborative (ITAC).
