He serves as the 2024 Humanities Research Group (HRG) fellow, focusing on U.S. colonial power dynamics and mentoring emerging scholars. His work bridges academic research with public engagement, including collaborations with the Amherstburg Freedom Museum and the Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary. French specializes in Black history, race relations, and colonial studies, particularly in the Detroit River borderland region. He has supervised student interns like Karleigh Kochaniec and Max Bennett in creating exhibits on Black settlers and Underground Railroad networks. His teaching emphasizes critical approaches to race and slavery in North America through innovative classroom practices highlighted in a 2022 Amherstburg Freedom Museum presentation. French also participates in interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Local Black History Internship Program and faculty-led study abroad program development in Costa Rica. His recent research activities include organizing the 'Presenting the Past to the Public' symposium (2023) and contributing to digital humanities projects that train students in archival research methods. He maintains active collaborations with cultural institutions, evident in his work with Leddy Library's open learning initiatives and his participation in public conversations about contested historical commemorations. French's work exemplifies the intersection of scholarly research, community engagement, and pedagogical innovation.
