Dr. Maryam Manely Zamani is an academic affiliated with McMaster University, holding a position as an instructional assistant at the School of Interdisciplinary Science (SIS) since 2022. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Tehran and completed postdoctoral fellowships at McMaster University and the University of Washington. Her research focuses on genomics, microbial genetics, and synthetic biology, particularly in bacterial symbiosis, nitrogen fixation, and phage defense mechanisms in Sinorhizobium meliloti. Dr. Zamani has also been recognized with a two-year competitive teaching fellowship from SIS, during which she instructed courses in synthetic biology, genome editing, and plant-microbe interactions. She explores minimal genome requirements for nitrogen fixation, phage defense mechanisms, and genetic engineering of bacterial strains for inter-kingdom DNA transfer. Recent Research Trends: Her most recent articles (2015–2023) emphasize phage resistance strategies, genomic minimalism in symbiotic bacteria, and molecular mechanisms underlying symbiotic nitrogen fixation. These studies highlight her expertise in microbial genetics and synthetic biology applications. Awards: Two-year Competitive Teaching Fellowship from the School of Interdisciplinary Science, McMaster University. Teaching & Mentorship: Dr. Zamani has taught various courses since 2020, including Communicating Science for Public Audiences, Science Communication in Life Sciences, and Research Seminars in Life Sciences.
