Ewa Gogola is a Wellcome Trust Early-Career Award Fellow and Nicholas Kurti Junior Research Fellow at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. She is affiliated with the Patel Group, where she investigates tissue-specific responses to endogenous DNA damage and their contributions to tissue homeostasis and ageing. Her research primarily focuses on DNA damage-induced whole genome duplication and polyploidy within the context of blood production. Dr. Gogola completed her PhD at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where she studied PARP inhibitor resistance in BRCA1/2-deficient cancers. Her work bridges molecular biology, cancer research, and DNA repair mechanisms with significant translational implications. Dr. Gogola's research centers on DNA damage response mechanisms, particularly in cancer development and treatment. She investigates how cells respond to endogenous DNA damage, with a specific focus on whole genome duplication and polyploidy events triggered by DNA damage. Her work has significant implications for understanding cancer progression and developing targeted therapies, especially for BRCA-deficient cancers. She utilizes advanced model systems including organoids to study drug resistance mechanisms and tissue-specific responses to genotoxic stress. Her publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on DNA repair mechanisms and cancer therapeutics, with particular emphasis on PARP inhibitors and their role in treating BRCA-deficient cancers. Over the past decade, her research has evolved from basic mechanisms of PARP inhibitor resistance to exploring broader implications for cancer treatment and tissue homeostasis. Recent work has expanded into areas such as formaldehyde metabolism, FGFR2 alterations in cancer, and the role of epigenetic regulators in DNA damage response, showing increasing translational relevance as evidenced by clinical trial references and guideline citations. Wellcome Trust Early-Career Award Fellowship Nicholas Kurti Junior Research Fellowship (Brasenose College) Dr. Gogola's research is supported by her Wellcome Trust Early-Career Award, which funds her investigation of tissue-specific responses to endogenous DNA damage. Her work builds on preclinical models developed during her PhD research at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Her publications have received significant attention across multiple platforms including news outlets, social media, and academic citation networks, with some works referenced in clinical guidelines and patents, demonstrating translational impact. Dr. Gogola works within the Patel Group at the University of Oxford, focusing on 'two tier protection and metabolic genotoxicity during blood production.' Her research integrates molecular biology approaches with cancer models to understand DNA damage response mechanisms in physiological contexts, with particular relevance to blood cell production and homeostasis.
