About
Professor John R B Perry is a human geneticist affiliated with the Institute of Metabolic Science and the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge. He serves as a MRC Programme Leader and Director of Studies (Medicine) at King’s College Cambridge. His research integrates population-scale genetics with experimental validation to elucidate mechanisms underlying metabolic diseases and reproductive aging.

His work focuses on genome-wide genetic screens to identify genes influencing metabolic health, with particular interest in early-life exposures and reproductive aging. He employs Mendelian randomization to infer causal relationships between biomarkers and disease outcomes, and collaborates extensively to validate genetic findings through cellular and animal models. Key themes include obesity genetics, proteomic aging markers, and causal pathways linking metabolic and reproductive health.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in multi-omics approaches to metabolic research, with studies on branched-chain amino acids, hypothalamic neuronal mapping, and coding variant contributions to disease heritability. His team actively develops polygenic risk scores and investigates developmental origins of metabolic traits.
