John Griffin is a Professor in the Department of Translational Medicine at the Scripps Research Institute. His research focuses on the cytoprotective protein C pathway, coagulation mechanisms, and neuroprotection in ischemic stroke. He holds adjunct professorships in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. Education includes a PhD in Biochemistry from Philipps University Marburg (1984) and an M.S. in Biology from Justus-Liebig University of Giessen (1980). Professional experience spans roles at Harvard Medical School, NIH, and the Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires in France before joining Scripps in 1974. Research interests include the structure-function relationships of activated protein C (APC), development of APC variants like 3K3A-APC for clinical trials, and mechanisms of PAR1 and EPCR receptors in anti-apoptotic signaling. His work bridges basic science, preclinical, and clinical studies with translational medicine applications. Key contributions include demonstrating APC's neuroprotective effects in stroke models and identifying protein S as a neuroprotectant with dual anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory roles. Recent studies explore APC's role in mitigating radiation injury and cardiac dysfunction. Awards include the 2005 ISTH Career Achievement Award and leadership roles in NIH review panels. He chairs scientific advisory boards for biotech firms focused on thrombosis therapies.
