Associate Professor
António Coelho is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the University of Porto's Department of Informatics Engineering and a senior researcher at INESC TEC. He coordinates the Computer Graphics and Virtual Environments area within the HUMANISE research group and leads the Doctoral Program in Digital Media. His roles include academic leadership in the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH). Coelho has been at INESC TEC since 1995 as an Area Manager, focusing on interdisciplinary research projects ranging from EU-funded initiatives to industry collaborations. His teaching spans Computer Graphics, Programming, and Digital Games, reflecting his expertise in Virtual Reality, Serious Games, and Geospatial Systems. Key research interests include procedural modeling, games-based learning, and location-based systems. Over 20 supervised theses demonstrate his mentorship in topics like immersive learning, AR solutions for heritage, and medical applications of serious games. Coelho’s recent work integrates AR/VR into education and healthcare, such as Histopoly (histology teaching) and Spot (melanoma prevention). Collaborative projects like the FRONTOWNS medieval town reconstruction highlight his multidisciplinary approach. He actively contributes to advancing digital media through both academic leadership and cutting-edge research in immersive technologies.
