Professor
Frode Rise is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. His research is centered around Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with applications spanning natural product chemistry, metabolomics, and structural analysis of biologically active compounds. His primary research interests include NMR structure determination of naturally occurring substances from plant and marine sources, metabolic studies using 13 C NMR spectroscopy, medical NMR metabolomics, and organic chemistry. Dr. Rise has made significant contributions to the structural characterization of marine toxins including pinnatoxins and maitotoxins, polysaccharide research from medicinal plants, and metabolomics studies with medical applications. His work demonstrates strong interdisciplinary collaboration across chemistry, biology, and medical research fields. Analysis of his recent publications (2021-2025) reveals a consistent focus on structural characterization using NMR techniques, with particular emphasis on marine toxins, plant polysaccharides, and medical metabolomics. His research bridges fundamental chemistry with practical applications in food safety, traditional medicine validation, and disease biomarker discovery. The publications show strong international collaboration, particularly with researchers in marine toxicology and natural product chemistry. Dr. Rise maintains laboratory facilities in rooms Ø 320, Ø322, 332, 334, 338, and 340 at the University of Oslo and is associated with the University of Oslo NMR Center and the Norwegian Society for Magnetic Resonance. While MSc projects in synthetic organic chemistry are not currently offered due to funding constraints for chemicals and equipment, his research group continues to be active in NMR-based structural analysis across multiple domains.
