Associate Professor
Nikhil Munshi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He serves as Assistant Director of the Physician-Scientist Training Program and Associate Director of the Harry S. Moss Heart Center. A graduate of UC-San Diego and Columbia University, Dr. Munshi combines clinical cardiology with molecular research to study cardiac rhythms and regenerative therapies. Education: B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Biology (UC-San Diego, summa cum laude), M.D. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry (Columbia University) Clinical Training: Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiology Fellowship (UT Southwestern) Postdoctoral Training: Molecular Cardiology and Developmental Biology (Columbia and UT Southwestern) His research explores gene regulatory networks governing cardiac conduction system development and disease mechanisms in dysrhythmias. Key areas include transcription factor-mediated reprogramming, CRISPR-based disease modification, and regenerative medicine approaches for heart repair. The Munshi Lab employs a multidisciplinary strategy spanning single-cell analysis to human physiology. Article trends reveal expertise in cardiac regeneration (2014-2021), transcriptional regulation of heart development (2009-2020), CRISPR applications (2016), and macrophage roles in cardiac homeostasis (2017). Publications span Cell, Circulation, and Development journals. Scientific Awards : Joanne McWhorter Award for Excellence in Clinical Cardiology Disease Oriented Clinical Scholar (2011) Dr. Munshi advises trainees through his roles in the Internal Medicine Physician-Scientist Development Committee and Genes, Development, and Disease Graduate Program Steering Committee. His work has been supported by institutional grants and collaborations.
