His academic career spans over two decades with significant contributions to understanding penal policies, particularly in the Bulgarian context. Dr. Kanoushev's research interests focus on the sociology of crime, punishment systems, biopolitics, social deviance, and the sociology of law. His scholarly work demonstrates a consistent engagement with Michel Foucault's theoretical framework, examining power relations, social control mechanisms, and the historical development of penal systems. His research trajectory shows a progression from studying contemporary crime and punishment to conducting deep historical analyses of Bulgaria's penal policies across different political regimes. His most significant scholarly contribution is the three-volume work 'Historical Sociology of Penal Policies in Bulgaria,' which earned him a nomination for the prestigious Pythagoras Award from the Ministry of Education and Science. His recent publications reveal an expanding research focus to include contemporary issues such as anti-liberal propaganda in Bulgarian media and the biopolitics of migration. Throughout his career, Professor Kanoushev has held numerous research positions, including at the Institute of Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He has also served as Head of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology at New Bulgarian University from 2014 to 2016 and has been an active member of the editorial board for 'Critique and Humanism' journal since 2009.
