Assistant Professor
Dr. Chun Liu is an Assistant Professor in Physiology and Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, affiliated with the Cardiovascular Research Center and Cancer Center. His research focuses on cardiovascular diseases and cancer using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), CRISPR screening, and multiomics approaches. He completed his PhD in stem cell biology at Peking University and a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University, where he developed iPSC-based models for studying diseases like laminopathy cardiomyopathy and drug-induced toxicity. Education: PhD in Stem Cell Biology, Peking University (mentored by Dr. Hongkui Deng) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease, Stanford Cardiovascular Institute (with Dr. Joseph Wu) BS, China Agricultural University Research Interests: Dr. Liu’s lab integrates iPSC-derived disease models with high-throughput CRISPR screens to uncover genetic regulators in heart disease, cardiotoxicity, and cardio-oncology. Key areas include: iPSC reprogramming and differentiation CRISPRi/a screens for drug target discovery Epigenetic mechanisms in vascular dysfunction Population-level disease modeling using iPSCs Publications: Recent work highlights CRISPR-based identification of drug targets for doxorubicin cardiotoxicity, mechanisms of NAA10-linked long QT syndrome, and statin-mediated endothelial protection. These studies emphasize translational applications in precision medicine and drug development. Awards: American Heart Association (AHA) Second Century Early Faculty Independence Award (2023–2026) AHA Career Development Award (2019–2022) Stanford Cardiovascular Institute Seed Grant Advancing Science: Dr. Liu mentors students and researchers in cutting-edge projects like "population-in-a-dish" modeling and CRISPR-Perturb-seq. His lab actively collaborates on stem cell therapies, cardiac organoid engineering, and cardio-oncology drug screening. Open positions exist for postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates. Labs/Teams: The iPSC-Perturbation Lab focuses on regenerative cardiovascular medicine, leveraging CRISPR tools and iPSCs to address unmet clinical needs in cardiac repair and genetic disease correction.
