Associate Professor
TyRuben Ellingson is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Communication Arts at the School of the Arts , Virginia Commonwealth University . With a distinguished career spanning decades in Hollywood as a concept designer and visual effects art director , he has contributed to iconic films including Jurassic Park , Star Wars: A New Hope , Avatar , and Pacific Rim . His expertise lies in conceptual design for cinema, visual effects , and entertainment design . MFA in Painting, Southern Methodist University MA in Painting and BElectiveSt in Art, St. Cloud State University Ellingson’s research interests focus on conceptual design methodologies and digital tools for cinematic storytelling . He emphasizes design philosophy , creative problem-solving , and collaborative visual development . His work bridges science fiction with real-world design challenges , particularly in mechanical and creature design . His filmography includes Academy Award-winning and Art Directors Guild-recognized projects. Notably, he served as Lead Vehicle Designer for Avatar and contributed to Elysium and Pacific Rim .
