Zoya Khan is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literature at the University of South Alabama. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2003), an M.A. (1994), and a B.A. (1992) from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. Her research focuses on Spanish American Literature and Culture with specializations in Andean and US Hispanic Literature, alongside interests in South Asian Culture, Medical Humanities, Literary Theory, Subaltern Studies, Women's Studies, and Film Studies.
Professor Khan has directed multiple undergraduate honors theses, including works on Latin American fantastic literature, representations of immigrants in Spanish cinema, and interdisciplinary studies of physician perceptions in early 20th-century Latin America. She also supervises projects through the University Council of Undergraduate Research (UCUR), such as studies on surrealist literature and Latin American immigrant narratives. Her courses cover graduate and undergraduate language, culture, and literature, including specialized seminars on Latin American novels, Borges, and Vargas Llosa's works.
Her publications span journals like Bulletin of Spanish Studies, A Contracorriente, and Transmodernity, with topics ranging from postnational narratives in Carmen Boullosa's novels to indigenous subjectivity in Jesús Lara's writings. She is also a reviewer for major academic publications and has contributed to works on decolonization and transcultural narratives.
As director of the Graduate Certificate in Spanish for Healthcare Professionals, she bridges medical education and language studies. Her scholarly contributions emphasize transnationalism, postcolonial theory, and the intersection of literature with social and political contexts.
