Zazil Reyes Garcia

Dr. Zazil Reyes García is an Associate Professor and Director of Communication Arts ABM Programs at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), affiliated with the School of Media and Design. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from UT Austin (2013), an M.A. from ITESO (2007), and a B.A. from Tec de Monterrey (1998). Her research focuses on Latina/o/x Studies, Gender Studies, and Media Analysis, particularly in political cartoons and visual rhetoric. Her work appears in the Oxford Encyclopedia of Communication and award-winning volumes like Black Comics and Latina/o/x Communication Studies.

Her academic journey includes roles at UIW since 2014, UT Austin (2011-2013), and Tec de Monterrey (2005-2009). She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on media diversity, rhetorical criticism, bilingual journalism, and cultural communication. Her awards include multiple Top Paper honors from the National Communication Association and a Will Eisner Award for scholarly work.

Research interests span cross-border cultural narratives, media representation of Latinx communities, and visual rhetoric’s role in socio-political discourse. She advises on Latina/o/x studies, race/gender in media, and visual communication theory.
