About
Professor Yuqin Wang is a full-time Professor at Swansea University, affiliated with the Swansea University Medical School within the Department of Biomedical Sciences. She joined Swansea in 2007 as a Lecturer, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013, and to Professor in 2018. Her academic journey includes a BSc in Pharmacy from Peking University and a PhD in Medical Biochemistry from Karolinska Institute, followed by postdoctoral training in industry and at University College London.
Professor Wang's research centers on cholesterol metabolism and its impact on human health and disease, with expertise in lipid mass spectrometry, mass spectrometry imaging, and sterol protein interactions. Her work bridges neuroscience, immunology, and analytical biochemistry, focusing on neurodegenerative diseases, neurodevelopment, and lipid-mediated signaling pathways.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on cholesterol metabolites in neurodegenerative conditions (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis), neurodevelopmental processes, and immune responses. These studies utilize advanced mass spectrometry techniques to profile lipids in biological systems, revealing novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
Professor Wang has contributed significantly to the lipidomics community by organizing key international meetings including the 5th European Lipidomic Meeting and an EMBO practical course on lipid mass spectrometry. She serves on the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) committee and the Editorial Board of Clinical Mass Spectrometry.
She leads collaborative research initiatives, most notably with Professor William Griffiths, co-inventing a patented method for steroid detection. Her laboratory focuses on translational lipidomics, investigating cholesterol pathways in brain health, immunity, and disease mechanisms.
