About
Yue Zhao is an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong, affiliated with the School of Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on surface engineering, corrosion protection, and advanced materials for biomedical and industrial applications. He leads a research group specializing in physical vapor deposition (PVD), plasma treatments, and organic/hybrid coating technologies.
Research Interests: Dr. Zhao explores superhydrophobic coatings, corrosion-resistant materials for magnesium alloys, and biomedical implant surfaces. His work includes developing PVD coatings for titanium alloys and cutting tools, as well as hydrogen storage materials like complex hydrides. He has pioneered methodologies for evaluating corrosion behavior and enhancing surface passivation.
Key Projects: He has secured over AUD 2 million in grants, including leadership roles in ARC ITRP Steel Hub (2015-2019) and DMTC-funded tooling projects. His research group collaborates with industry partners like BlueScope and Sutton Tools.
Advising & Grants: Currently supervising PhD and Master’s students on topics like tribological characterization and biomedical surface treatments. His group includes PostDocs, PhD candidates, and visiting scholars.
Labs/Teams: Leads a multidisciplinary team with expertise in thin film deposition, surface characterization, and materials durability. Organized international conferences like CAMS2018 and AMPT2012 symposia.
