About
Beatriz Mingo is a Senior Lecturer in Materials Engineering at The University of Manchester and a Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow. She leads research into smart, environmentally friendly surface treatments for light alloys (aluminum and magnesium), focusing on corrosion protection and extending material lifespans. Her work integrates ceramic-based coatings with encapsulated inhibitors for on-demand corrosion control and explores multifunctional biocompatible coatings for medical implants.
Education: PhD in Corrosion of Light Alloys (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2016), Humboldt Research Fellowship (Germany, 2017), and a Presidential Fellowship at The University of Manchester (2018). She holds a Master’s in Teaching and Learning (UCM, 2014) and degrees in Chemistry and Materials Science.
Research Interests: Corrosion protection mechanisms, ceramic coatings development, smart multifunctional materials, and biomaterials for biomedical applications. Her work aligns with UN SDG goals for sustainable innovation and responsible consumption.
Awards include the 2022 RAEng Young Engineer of the Year, University of Manchester Researcher of the Year, and UCM Alumni Award. She leads projects on next-generation ceramic coatings and energy-efficient PEO processes, collaborating with the Henry Royce Institute.
Advising/Grants: PI on projects including 'Next-generation of ceramic coatings for active protection of light alloys' (2021–2026) and 'High Performance Smart Ceramic Coatings' (2021–2023). Active in mentoring early-career researchers through fellowships.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Henry Royce Institute and the University of Manchester’s Materials Engineering department, focusing on advanced coating characterization and sustainable materials innovation.
