Ysmael Reyes is an Instructor of Music at Colorado State University's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) from the University of Colorado, a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of the Arts in Caracas, Venezuela. A versatile flutist, he specializes in classical, baroque, and contemporary repertoire, with particular expertise in Venezuelan and world music traditions.
His performance career includes roles as solo flutist with the Boulder Bach Festival’s Compass Resonance Ensemble and principal flutist with the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra. He has premiered works by composers such as Pablo Chin and frequently collaborates with world music ensembles. Notable achievements include the 2013 release of Incanto: Venezuelan Contemporary Music and solo performances of major concertos by Khachaturian, Nielsen, and Vivaldi.
Awards include top prizes in the National Flute Association Convention Performers Competition and the Bruce Ekstrand Memorial Competition. Reyes is also active as a clinician and adjudicator at international festivals, including the International Flute Festival in Venezuela and the Brownsville Flute Festival.
His teaching spans university instruction at CSU and Regis University, alongside pedagogical work rooted in Venezuela’s System of Youth Orchestras. He maintains an active recording career and regularly performs on baroque flute with ensembles like the Bach Society Houston.
