Dr. Youssef M.A. Hashash is a Professor and holder of the Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering within the Grainger College of Engineering. He serves as a leading global authority in geotechnical earthquake engineering and tunnel engineering.
Education: Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from MIT.
Research focuses on numerical modeling, seismic analysis of underground structures, static/seismic soil-structure interaction, and AI/deep learning applications in geotechnical engineering. His work includes developing DEEPSOIL software for seismic site response analysis.
Awards: Peck Medal, Huber Prize, and Presidential Early Career Award. Active in professional leadership, including presidency of ASCE’s Geo-Institute and membership in the National Academy of Engineering.
Collaborates across disciplines with faculty/students in the College of Engineering and College of Architecture. Holds five patents and has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications.
