About
Professor Giulia Viggiani is a Professor of Infrastructure Geotechnics in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. Previously, she served as Full Professor of Geotechnics at Università di Roma “Tor Vergata” and headed its Board of Studies in Civil and Environmental Engineering. She holds a Laurea in Civil Engineering from Università di Napoli Federico II (1989) and a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from City University, London (1994).
Her research focuses on applying soil mechanics to geotechnical engineering, with emphasis on underground construction, foundation engineering, earthquake geotechnical engineering, and performance-based design of geotechnical structures under seismic actions. She has conducted original research on tunnelling processes, damage assessment, mitigation measures, and fundamental soil mechanics topics like freezing ground and granular materials with crushable grains.
Giulia combines field monitoring, laboratory observations, theoretical analyses, and physical/numerical modeling in her work. Notable projects include the Jubilee Line Extension in London, Napoli underground Lines 1 and 6, Roma underground Line C, and the Strait of Messina Bridge foundations.
