Yoshida Kei

Yoshida Kei is a Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Waseda University, where he has held his position since 2022. His scholarship bridges philosophy and ethics, focusing on methodological individualism, institutionalism, and the intersection of neuroscience with social sciences. Previously, he served as Associate Professor (2017-2022) and Assistant Professor (2015-2017) at Waseda, and as a Visiting Scholar at York University (2018-2019) and the University of South Florida (2007-2011). He earned his Ph.D. from York University, Canada.

Yoshida’s research investigates foundational questions in the philosophy of social sciences, including critiques of cultural interpretivism, naturalization of economics, and neuroeconomics. His work often engages with thinkers like Popper, Kuhn, Fodor, and Kim, analyzing tensions between scientific objectivity and relativism. Recent projects explore the reducibility of social sciences to biology and the role of institutions in shaping human behavior and rationality.

His publications span peer-reviewed journals like Social Epistemology and Philosophy of the Social Sciences, as well as edited volumes such as Rationality and Cultural Interpretivism and The Palgrave Handbook of Methodological Individualism. He has been recognized with the Waseda Research Award (2016) and the Kino Kuniya Book Award (2022) for his monograph Philosophy of the Social Sciences: An Introduction.

Yoshida actively contributes to academic governance as Managing Editor of Philosophy of the Social Sciences and editorial roles in multiple societies. He has presented extensively at international conferences, including the Karl Popper Centenary Assessment and the East Asian Philosophy of Science Workshop.
