Winifred Smith

Winifred Smith (1879–1967) was a prominent Vassar College faculty member and educational reformer. She joined Vassar’s English Department in 1911 as an instructor and later became Chair of the Drama Department (1939–1947). Born to a heretic father and raised as an atheist, her academic focus centered on Italian commedia dell’arte and practical theater education, advocating for the integration of performance into drama studies. She pioneered interdepartmental collaboration, co-creating courses like “Tragedy: Greek, Renaissance, and Modern.”

Research emphasized theater’s societal role, culminating in two influential books on commedia dell’arte. She championed student theater through the Dramatic Workshops and Experimental Theater, fostering a legacy of hands-on learning. Post-retirement, she remained active in education advocacy, founding initiatives like the Winifred Smith Grant. Her activism extended to suffrage, community theater, and progressive education reforms.
