William Shutkin is a Teaching Professor and Faculty Director of the Masters of the Environment program at the University of Colorado Boulder, leading the Urban Resilience and Sustainability specialization. He holds a JD and MA from the University of Virginia, an AB from Brown University, and completed PhD studies at UC Berkeley. His career spans academia, law, and social entrepreneurship in sustainability.
Shutkin's research focuses on urban sustainability, climate resilience, and equitable development. Notable contributions include founding New Ecology, Inc., which pioneered green affordable housing, and co-founding the Alternatives for Community & Environment law center. His work integrates environmental justice, real estate development, and policy innovation.
He has received the American Political Science Association Best Book Award for The Land That Could Be and authored A Republic of Trees. His current projects include the $240MM Shutkin Sustainable Living (SSL) development portfolio in Boulder, emphasizing mixed-use, mixed-income urban infill.
