William Helling, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Program Director in the Department of Library and Information Science at Indiana University's Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in French from the University of Kansas (1986), an M.A. in French (1981), a B.A. in Art and French from Avila College (1978), and an M.I.S. in Library Science from Indiana University (1998).
His research focuses on website navigation, information architecture, and French language/literature. He has received multiple Fulbright Scholar awards (2013, 2020, 2022) for teaching and lecturing at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, Finland, where he explored improving business services via information technology. He also earned an IU Global Classroom Fellowship in 2021.
Helling teaches courses such as Information Representation, Web Programming, and Library Systems. He has over two decades of experience as a public librarian, specializing in systems and reference services. His work includes digitizing historical library resources, enhancing website accessibility, and integrating RFID and eBook technologies into library systems.
He has published and presented on topics including French 19th-century exploration narratives, film interpretations of literature, and technology's role in libraries.
