William Dougherty is an American composer, sound artist, educator, and music writer currently serving as Assistant Professor of Music Composition, Theory, and Improvisation at the University of Washington in Seattle. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) from Columbia University and has taught at Columbia University and Temple University, where he was an Adjunct Artist in Residence in Music Composition. Dougherty is renowned for his work on the inner life of sound, psychoacoustic phenomena, and experimental music practices.

Dougherty’s research focuses on exposing the microlevel sonic structures within sound, particularly through the lens of early recording technology and immersive sonic experiences. His work interrogates hierarchical traditions in classical music and seeks to build counterhegemonic creative processes that prioritize communal and equitable musical practices. He has been featured in major festivals such as Klangspuren and IRCAM's ManiFeste, and his music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
His recent publications include the 2024 special issue of Contemporary Music Review on Éliane Radigue, where he served as co-editor. Dougherty has also contributed to VAN Magazine, Tempo, and Music & Literature, with critical interviews and reviews of composers like Pauline Oliveros and Horatiu Radulescu. He is the Editor-in-Chief of openwork, a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal for experimental music and art.
