Will Oliphant

Will Oliphant is a University Teacher (equivalent to Lecturer) at the University of Sheffield's School of Information, Journalism and Communication, based in The Wave building. He joined the university in August 2017 as a University Teaching Associate and was promoted to University Teacher in February 2020. Prior to academia, he held senior editorial roles at major UK news organizations including The Daily Mirror (as Acting Head of Video) and Mail Online.

His research interests focus on contemporary journalism practices, particularly:

• Data-driven storytelling and computational journalism
• Video production for digital news platforms
• Multimedia content strategies for online media
• Digital newsroom operations and workflow optimization

He received the Midlands Online Journalist of the Year award for his frontline coverage of urban riots and football violence. His professional expertise includes developing video strategies for major publications and creating original digital content.

Oliphant leads multiple journalism modules including JNL235 Data-Driven Storytelling and JNL6046 Dealing with Data for Journalists. He also contributes to essential journalism skills training, live news production, and online portfolio development courses. His industry background informs curriculum design for digital journalism education.
