Emma Oliver

Emma Oliver is a University Teacher (Lecturer) at the School of Information, Journalism and Communication, University of Sheffield, joining in January 2023 after five years as Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Football Journalism at the University of Derby.

Her educational background includes:

Research centers on digital journalism transformation, specifically examining social media's role in online abuse against journalists and its mental health impacts regarding race, gender, and sexuality. She also investigates youth news consumption patterns, disinformation dynamics, and the evolving 'journo-influencer' phenomenon reshaping journalistic identity.

Prior to academia, Emma worked 12 years as a journalist with major UK regional media (Johnston Press, Northcliffe, Reach plc), serving as news editor at The Sentinel and Newcastle Chronicle, then Digital Development Editor for Reach plc's Newsroom 3.1 pilot, and finally Content Editor at Teesside Live/The Gazette.

She currently teaches Essential Journalism (JNL120), Live News Production (JNL231), Magazine Journalism and Production (JNL333), and Final Project (JNL335), while maintaining active freelance journalism work in the East Midlands.
