Wilhelm Friess is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine's College of Engineering and Computing. He obtained his Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1997 and has been actively involved in aerospace research, energy efficiency, and engineering education innovation.
His research spans Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (with a focus on lighter-than-air vehicles), Energy Efficiency in Extreme Climates, and Engineering Pedagogy. Recent publications highlight his work in transforming mechanical engineering capstone experiences, integrating peer evaluation in team projects, and exploring building energy retrofits in Dubai.
He has led interdisciplinary collaborations with NASA, NSF, UMaine Forest Sciences, USDA/ARS, and institutions like Rochester Institute of Technology (Dubai Campus) and the Emirates Foundation. His teaching areas include Engineering Graphics, Strength of Materials, and Fixed Wing Aircraft Design.
