Wang Hui

Wang Hui is a Distinguished Professor of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Tsinghua University, where he also serves as Founding Director of the Tsinghua Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences. His academic career includes visiting roles at institutions such as Harvard University, Princeton's IAS, and the Max Planck Institute. He holds a Ph.D. from Nanjing University (1988), an M.A. from Yangzhou Teachers College (1985), and a B.A. from the same institution (1981).

Research focuses on modern Chinese thought, global social theory, and China’s role in world history. Notable works include The Rise of Modern Chinese Thought and China’s Twentieth Century. Awards include the Anneliese Maier Research Award (2018) and recognition by Prospect Magazine as a top thinker (2023).

Grants and fellowships span decades, including the Bernhard Karlgren Fellowship (2013) and a Senior Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Bologna (2004). His work bridges Chinese intellectual history with global sociopolitical analysis.
