Walter Funkat (1906–2006) was a prominent figure in art and design education, serving as Professor, Director, and the first Rektor (President) of Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle. He held academic leadership roles from 1946 onwards, including directing the Institute for Werkkunst (Applied Arts) and establishing the Fachklasse für Gebrauchsgrafik (Class for Applied Graphics). His career spanned teaching, design practice, and administrative leadership in the German art education system.

Research & Practice: Specialized in applied graphics, design pedagogy, and the intersection of art and industrial practices. His 1970 publication Kunsthandwerk der DDR documented East German design traditions. He championed modernist approaches in art education and institutional development.
