Prof. Volker Jacobsen is a Professor of Viola at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. Born in Hanover, he studied viola with Prof. Barbara Westphal at the Lübeck University of Music. He co-founded the Artemis Quartet in 1989, which achieved international acclaim through competitions like the German Music Competition (1995), ARD Munich (1996), and Premio Paolo Borciani (1997). The ensemble's accolades include Diapason d'or, Echo Klassik, and honorary memberships at institutions like the Beethovenhaus Bonn and Accademia Chigiana Siena.
His teaching roles include professorships at the UdK Berlin and visiting professorships at Brussels' Chapelle Reine Elisabeth. Since 2007, he has focused on chamber music and education at Hanover. His students hold prominent positions in orchestras globally. Collaborations include partnerships with Lars Vogt, Christian Tetzlaff, and ensembles like the Bartholdy Quintet and MAX Piano Quartet.
Recent student achievements include 2nd prize for Pin-Shiuan Lin and the Birgit Nilsson Scholarship for Karolina Bengtsson. Jacobsen’s work emphasizes chamber music performance and pedagogy, blending concert tours, recordings, and educational mentorship.
