Professor Vida Midgelow serves as Dean of the Doctoral School and Professor in Dance and Choreographic Practices at the University of the Arts London (UAL). She leads the doctoral education strategy and is a principal researcher of the Erasmus+ funded Artistic Doctorates in Europe initiative. Her academic focus spans artistic research methodologies, improvisation practices, and embodied pedagogy. She co-developed the Creative Articulations Process (CAP), a framework widely adopted in practice-as-research contexts.
Her research interests include doctoral education reform, ethics in artistic research, and somatic improvisation techniques. She co-directs the Choreographic Lab, fostering critical inquiry and choreographic innovation. Midgelow is co-investigator on the AHRC-funded 'Future Ecologies: Producing Dance Network,' addressing sustainability in dance sectors. She actively contributes to peer review for funding bodies (AHRC, British Academy) and journals like Choreographic Practices (Intellect) and Dance Research Journal.
As a practitioner-scholar, she bridges performance art and theory through installations, video works, and performative lectures. Her edited works include the Oxford Handbook of Improvisation in Dance and Reworking the Ballet. She holds leadership roles in academic organizations, including former Chair of the Standing Conference on Dance in Higher Education and board member of the Society of Dance History Scholars.
