Umar Tukur

Umar Tukur is a Lecturer I at Gallaudet University's English Language Institute (ELI) within the School of Language, Education, and Culture. He holds a Bachelor's in Special Education from the University of Jos (Nigeria) and a Master's in Deaf Education from Gallaudet. Before academia, he served as Special Adviser on Disability Affairs to the Adamawa State Governor in Nigeria and taught Deaf children through K-12 education in his home country.

His teaching focuses on English language proficiency and college readiness, including courses like ELI-106/206/306 College Test Preparation. He actively contributes to campus life through roles such as Co-Advisor for the African Students Union, Board Member of the Nigerian National Association of the Deaf, and Director of Communication for Strategies to Advance and Network Deaf African for Ubuntu, Inc.

Professionally, he participates in global initiatives including TESOL (since 2020) and the Mandela Washington Fellows Program. His work emphasizes bilingualism in education, disability advocacy, and empowering Deaf communities in Africa.
