Uli Sauerland serves as Vice Director of the Leibniz-Centre General Linguistics (ZAS) and heads Research Area 4 'Semantics & Pragmatics'. He holds an honorary adjunct professorship at the University of Potsdam. Sauerland earned his PhD in Linguistics from MIT in 1998 and completed habilitation at the University of Potsdam in 2007.
His research examines how humans assign meaning to sentences through integration of language acquisition data, field research, and mathematical modeling. Current projects include ERC-funded 'Realizing Leibniz’s Dream' on child language cognition and DFG investigations into logical particles across languages.
Teaching encompasses graduate and undergraduate courses in semantic theory, pragmatics, and linguistic architecture at institutions including Harvard University, Stanford University, and University of Potsdam. Course topics range from event semantics to cross-linguistic variation in complement clauses.
