About
Prof. Dr. Tsjalling Swierstra serves as Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy within Maastricht University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He concurrently directs the Faculty's Graduate School and leads the Centre for the Ethics and Politics of Emerging Technologies, while chairing the Dutch Society of the Philosophy of Medicine to advance discourse in medical ethics.
Swierstra completed his academic training in Philosophy and Political Science at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Groningen.
His research critically examines technology's societal implications through dual lenses:
- Biomedical Frontiers: Developing predictive scenarios for moral controversies around emerging biomedical technologies
- Convergence Ethics: Analyzing ethical consequences of integrated technologies (nanotech, biotech, infotech, cogtech)
This work establishes him as a pivotal figure in shaping ethical frameworks for technological innovation.
Through 4TU.Ethics—a collaboration of four Dutch technical universities—he actively engages industry, policymakers, and civil society in knowledge exchange, though specific advisees and grant details remain unspecified in available materials.
His directorship of the Centre for the Ethics and Politics of Emerging Technologies facilitates interdisciplinary research on governance models for emerging technologies across European academic networks.
