Tracy Chapman Hamilton is an Associate Professor of Art History at Sweet Briar College, where she teaches courses ranging from introductory surveys to specialized graduate seminars. Her research and teaching span premodern Europe and the Mediterranean, emphasizing global contexts and methodologies rooted in women’s studies, materiality, and spatiality. She actively integrates cutting-edge digital tools such as photogrammetry, 3D photography, and augmented reality into her work to enhance scholarly and public engagement with cultural heritage.
Hamilton holds a B.A. in Art History from the University of Delaware, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin. She has contributed to interdisciplinary initiatives, including co-editing Moving Women Moving Objects 400-1500 and authoring Pleasure and Politics at the Court of France: The Artistic Patronage of Queen Marie of Brabant (1260-1321), which won the 2020 International Center of Medieval Art Annual Book Prize. She has led workshops at the Digital Humanities Institute (American University of Beirut, 2019) and co-founded initiatives like MappingtheMedievalWoman.com.
Her teaching focuses on fostering critical and creative perspectives through courses like Digital Art History as a Research Tool, Medieval Pilgrimage: Relics, Ritual, and Architecture, and The Land as Art. She is a pioneer in virtual mentorship programs addressing pandemic-era challenges in museums and academia, notably through collaborations with the International Center of Medieval Art and Middle Ages for Educators.
