Torsten Frey

Torsten Frey is a Scientific Researcher at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in the DeepSea Monitoring Group since 2019. He also serves as a Guest Researcher at Leipzig University's Chair for Environmental Engineering and Environmental Management since 2020. His work focuses on marine environmental issues, particularly related to underwater munitions and risk assessment.

Dr. Frey's research focuses on the assessment and management of underwater military munitions, developing risk assessment models for unexploded ordnance in marine environments. His doctoral thesis, "A New Risk Assessment Model for Unexploded Underwater Military Munitions," represents a significant contribution to this field. His work integrates environmental engineering principles with maritime spatial planning to address ecological and safety challenges posed by underwater munitions.

Dr. Frey leads and participates in numerous research initiatives addressing marine munitions remediation, including CONMAR (2021-2027), MMinE-SwEEPER (2024-2028), and BorDEx (2024-2027), which focus on developing economically and ecologically sustainable solutions for underwater munitions problems.

Dr. Frey has participated in multiple research cruises for munitions monitoring in the Baltic Sea, including projects AL590 (2023) and AL548 (2020). As part of GEOMAR's DeepSea Monitoring working group within the Marine Geosystems research unit, Dr. Frey contributes significantly to the institution's mission of addressing marine environmental challenges, particularly those related to underwater munitions and their ecological consequences in marine ecosystems.
