About
Dr. Samar Ensenbach serves as Scientific Researcher (Post-Doc) and Scientific Project Manager at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel within Research Division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry. She leads the DeepSea Monitoring Working Group in the Marine Geosystems Research Unit, focusing on marine munitions remediation and sustainable ocean management in the Baltic and North Seas.
Dr. Ensenbach earned her Doctorate from Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel with research on Colony Collapse Disorder in Honeybees. Her academic background includes a Master of Science in Environmental Management and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering and Natural Resources from IAU Tehran.
Her research integrates environmental science with practical policy applications, specializing in munitions contamination assessment, multi-criteria decision analysis for marine spatial planning, and sustainable development frameworks. She actively bridges scientific findings with stakeholder engagement through science communication initiatives focused on marine environmental challenges.
Dr. Ensenbach's publication record demonstrates expertise in marine munitions remediation and renewable energy transition, with particular emphasis on hydrogen production impacts in contaminated marine environments. Her work shows increasing focus on practical solutions that balance ecological protection with economic development in the Baltic Sea region.
As Scientific Project Manager for the MUNIMAR Centre, Dr. Ensenbach leads critical initiatives including MMinE-SwEEPER (2024-2028), MUNI-RISK (2024-2027), and CONMAR (2021-2027), which develop economically viable and ecologically sound approaches to marine munitions remediation. She has secured significant research funding for these projects addressing Germany's marine environmental challenges.
Within GEOMAR's DeepSea Monitoring Working Group, Dr. Ensenbach contributes to field research through participation in cruises AL590 (2023) monitoring ecological consequences of marine munition and Littorina (2022) for mine monitoring in the German Baltic Sea, connecting laboratory research with real-world environmental assessment.
