Tore Rem is a Professor of English Literature at the University of Oslo and Director of UiO:Democracy since 2023, previously leading UiO:Nordic (2019–2023). He holds a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford and has held senior academic roles at Christ Church and the University of Oslo since the 1990s. His research focuses on Victorian literature, the history of the book, reception studies, and Scandinavian authors like Ibsen and Hamsun.
Rem’s academic journey includes a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ Church (1996–2001) and multiple visiting fellowships at prestigious institutions. His work bridges literary analysis with historical and cultural contexts, emphasizing global literary networks and authorship studies. Notable publications include Knut Hamsun: The Journey to Hitler and Ibsen in Context.
His awards include the Critics’ Prize for non-fiction (2014, 2022), membership in the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, and visiting fellowships at All Souls College and EHESS Paris. Rem’s projects include editing Knut Hamsun’s On Overgrown Paths and a biography of Max Tau.
