Stephen Romer

Dr. Stephen Romer is a Stipendiary Lecturer in French at Brasenose College, University of Oxford, and a Royal Literary Fund Fellow. His academic career includes roles at Université François Rabelais (Tours), Colgate University (NY), and multiple visiting fellowships across Oxford and Cambridge colleges. He holds MA and PhD degrees from the University of Cambridge (Cantab).

His research focuses on Franco-British Modernism, contemporary Francophone/Anglophone poetry, visual arts intersections, Decadence studies, and translation methodologies. Notable publications include critical editions of Yves Bonnefoy's works and translated poetry collections.

Romer has received the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (2021) and held prestigious visiting fellowships at All Souls, Christ Church, and other Oxford colleges. His teaching emphasizes French translation across undergraduate years and advanced translation practices. Recent works demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches linking poetry with visual arts and transnational publishing contexts.
