Dr. Tony Street is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (CAIS) within the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences. Formerly, he taught classical Arabic at ANU until 1999 and has since worked at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Divinity, where he focuses on religious and intellectual texts central to Islamic education. His current research involves completing a commentary on Najm al-Din al-Katibi's Logic for Shams al-Din, a foundational text studied across law and theology from the 14th to 19th centuries. He is broadly interested in developments in Islamic intellectual history following Avicenna's era.
Street's work bridges Orientalist and theological scholarship, emphasizing textual analysis of medieval Islamic thought. His ongoing project on al-Katibi highlights his commitment to preserving and interpreting historically significant works that shaped religious and intellectual frameworks in the pre-modern Islamic world.
