Tone Rustøen is a Professor II at the Department of Public Health and Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at the University of Oslo. She has been employed at UiO since 2012 and serves as Head of the nursing research group at the Emergency Department of Oslo University Hospital (OUS). With a background as a nurse and Candidate of Nursing Science, she earned her Dr.polit degree from the University of Bergen in 1998 and has been a professor since 2003.
Her research focuses on symptom management, pain, hope, intervention studies, health-related quality of life, rehabilitation of intensive care patients, and communication with ICU patients. She has established extensive international collaborations with institutions including University of California San Francisco, New York University, Radboud University, Queens University Belfast, and multiple Scandinavian hospitals.
Rustøen's publication record shows a strong emphasis on critical care outcomes, with recent work examining ICU symptomatology, hope theory, pain management algorithms, and long-term recovery trajectories. Her research employs diverse methodologies including prospective cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, qualitative investigations, and systematic reviews, often with multicenter designs that enhance generalizability of findings. The work consistently addresses patient-centered outcomes and aims to improve clinical practice through evidence-based interventions.
She leads research projects including Pediatric pain management practices in postoperative units and The MultiKnee Trial, demonstrating her commitment to translating research into practical healthcare improvements. Her work bridges clinical practice and academic research, maintaining strong connections with healthcare institutions while advancing scientific knowledge in critical care nursing and symptom management.
