About
Dag Kvale is a Professor in Infectious Diseases at the Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo (UiO), and has served as Head of Department since 2019. He is affiliated with Oslo University Hospital (OUS) and leads clinical research on chronic infections, with a focus on HIV and tuberculosis. His work bridges immunological mechanisms and translational clinical studies, including therapeutic vaccine trials and sepsis research.
Research interests center on chronic infections and their immunopathological consequences, including immune exhaustion, microbial translocation, and inflammatory brake systems. He has pioneered clinical-scale immunological assays for patient stratification in vaccine trials and investigates persistent immunopathology in effectively treated HIV patients. His sepsis research (SEPSOMICS) explores pathophysiological endotypes using omics approaches.
Key publications span HIV vaccine trials (Vacc-4x, Vacc-C5, Vaccibody platform), tuberculosis immunotherapy with COX-2 inhibitors, and sepsis biomarker studies. Collaborations include Gunnveig Grødeland (Immunology, UiO/ OUS), Kenneth Baillie (UK), and international partners in South Africa and Europe. His work involves nine PhD and two researcher students, with clinical trials conducted at OUS and biobank initiatives at the Emergency Department.
