Tommi Tolmunen

Tommi Tolmunen is a Professor at the Institute of Clinical Medicine within the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. With decades of academic experience, he has established himself as a leading researcher in adolescent psychiatry, depression, and nutritional psychiatry, maintaining an active research program with multiple projects extending through 2025-2030.

Dr. Tolmunen's research focuses on the intersection of physical and mental health, particularly examining how lifestyle factors influence adolescent and adult mental wellbeing. His primary areas include adolescent psychiatry, depression mechanisms and treatment, alcohol use disorders, nutritional psychiatry, psychometric assessment tools, and wellbeing promotion. His work frequently investigates how diet, physical activity, social relationships, and environmental factors affect mental health outcomes across the lifespan.

His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on metabolomics approaches to understanding mental health conditions, examining how alcohol use, nutrition, and other lifestyle factors alter biological markers related to depression and psychosis.
