About
Dr. Tom LETESSIER is a Lecturer in Marine Conservation at the University of Plymouth's School of Biological and Marine Sciences (within the Faculty of Science and Engineering). His research focuses on improving marine species, habitat, and ecosystem conservation through interdisciplinary approaches combining ecological, social science, and technological methods. He examines pressures on biodiversity from environmental and human activities, aiming to bridge conservation theory and practice.
Dr. Letessier has held roles including Research Fellow at the Institute of Zoology, ZSL (2016–2024) and postdoctoral positions exploring marine ecosystems. He supervises PhD students researching shark monitoring, cetacean acoustics in the Chagos Archipelago, and cetacean habitat analysis, funded by NERC and the Bertarelli Foundation.
His work emphasizes applied conservation, including plastic pollution impacts on marine life, illegal fishing dynamics in MPAs, and leveraging eDNA and UAV technologies. He teaches modules like 'Marine Ecosystem Conservation' and 'Managing Marine Ecosystems,' integrating field and analytical methods.
Key collaborations include the University of Oxford, Ocean University of Sri Lanka, and the Institute of Zoology, ZSL. His projects often address global challenges like mitigating anthropogenic pressures on remote marine ecosystems and advancing innovative monitoring techniques.
