Dr. Toby Martin is a Lecturer in Archaeology at the Department for Continuing Education, University of Oxford, where he directs the Weekly Class and Day/Weekend Event programmes in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Ancient History. He also serves as the Commissioning Editor for short online courses in these disciplines.
- Education: PhD in Archaeology (University of Sheffield), MSt in European Archaeology, BA in Archaeology and Anthropology (University of Oxford).
Research Interests focus on the early medieval period, particularly the social role of objects and material culture in post-Roman Europe. Key themes include age, gender, identity, networks, biography, and iconography, with a monograph and edited volumes on Anglo-Saxon dress and jewellery networks.
Recent publications highlight network approaches to artefact variation, regional landscape studies, and biographical methodologies applied to dress and jewellery. His work bridges academic archaeology with public engagement through courses and digital datasets.
