About
Professor Sarah Foot is Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Oxford's Department of Theology and Religion. Her research focuses on early medieval religious institutions, particularly Anglo-Saxon monasticism and the works of the Venerable Bede. She has pioneered studies on medieval women in religious roles and the intersection of Christianity with pre-Christian societies.
Current projects include an Oxford University Press edition of Anglo-Saxon monastic charters and a major biography of Bede. She also oversees revisions of Bede's foundational Ecclesiastical History for the Oxford World Classics series.
Supervision focuses on pre-1200 medieval ecclesiastical topics, with recent theses addressing intercessory prayer practices, medieval perceptions of Rome, and the role of angels in Anglo-Saxon religious thought. Her work intersects with broader questions of historiography and the formation of English national identity.
