Tjerk Budding

Prof. Tjerk Budding is a Full Professor of Public Sector Accounting at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Director of the Zijlstra Center for Public Control, Governance & Leadership. He holds a PhD from VU Amsterdam (2008) and serves as Program Director for the Bachelor Economics and Business Economics program. His research focuses on public sector accounting, governance, fiscal transparency, and municipal finance, with a strong emphasis on sustainability reporting and policy implementation. He has authored over 177 publications and actively participates in editorial roles for journals like Public Money & Management and the Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting and Financial Management. Notable contributions include studies on digital governance, post-pandemic financial resilience, and the impact of local politics on public spending. Budding also serves on several committees including the Dutch Statistics Expert Group and the Ministry of Health’s board of advisors.

His research explores institutional logics in public administration, the role of consultants in financial management, and hybrid auditing models. He has led projects on innovating public reporting frameworks and analyzing policy control mechanisms. Ancillary roles include board positions at COELO, TIAS School for Business and Society, and the Montessori Scholengemeenschap Amsterdam.
