Timothy A. Newkirk serves as an Associate Professor and Clinical Coordinator in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences at Andrews University. He joined the faculty in July 2010, bringing extensive clinical experience to his academic role.
Dr. Newkirk received his educational foundation at Andrews University with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology (1990) followed by a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology (1992). He later earned a Master of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Andrews University in 2014.
His research interests span Medical Laboratory Science Education, Clinical Pathology, Laboratory Safety Management, and Diagnostic Testing Methodologies. His recent work has particularly focused on adapting medical education to remote learning environments as evidenced by his 2021 publication.
Dr. Newkirk holds significant professional certifications:
- MT(ASCP) - Medical Technologist certification from American Society of Clinical Pathology
- CLS(NCA) - Clinical Laboratory Scientist certification (until merger with ASCP in 2009)
Prior to his academic career, Dr. Newkirk gained valuable clinical experience working as a medical technologist at multiple institutions including Pawating Hospital, Borgess Medical Center, Verde Valley Medical Center, and Northern Michigan Regional Hospital. His roles included lab safety officer and supervisory responsibilities over laboratory operations and support staff, providing him with comprehensive practical knowledge that informs his teaching approach.
As Clinical Coordinator, Dr. Newkirk plays a key role in connecting classroom education with practical clinical experiences for Medical Laboratory Sciences students at Andrews University.
