About
Tim Palmer is a Professor of Cardiovascular Biology and Head of the Centre for Biomedicine at Hull York Medical School. He holds a BSc (First Class) in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester and a PhD in Molecular Pharmacology from the University of Glasgow. His postdoctoral training included a fellowship at Duke University Medical Center, USA.
Research Focus: His work centers on identifying molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease, particularly the role of cytokine-driven inflammation in atherosclerosis and vascular dysfunction. He investigates signaling pathways in vascular cells to improve treatments for heart attack and stroke.
Grants: Active projects include £718k MRC funding for super-resolution imaging and £500k Wolfson Foundation support for confocal microscopy infrastructure. Previous grants include studies on vein graft failure and diabetes-related thrombosis.
Recognition: Awarded Fellowships from the Royal Society of Biology (2024) and Higher Education Academy (2017), plus leadership roles in the Biochemical Society’s Signalling Panel.
Education: Supervised 16 PhD students to completion, currently mentoring research on anti-inflammatory signaling, diabetes-linked platelet dysfunction, and repurposing anti-hyperglycaemic drugs for thrombosis treatment.
